The Cooler Master Vortex Plus: Compact & Efficient

Cooler Master Vortex Plus

The CM Vortex Plus is an exposed heatpipe based cooler. It has four 6mm copper heatpipes which extract heat from the CPU and direct it to the exhaust fan located on top of the cooler.

The 92mm exhaust fan is held in place with two wire fan clips. Four rubber patches were placed one on each corner of the cooler to prevent vibration/rattling sounds.

This cooler is an excellent choice for budget gaming PCs. Keep in mind if you’re on a budget and don’t plan on overclocking, the free stock cooler is the best option.

Price

The Cooler Master Vortex Plus can be found on eBay or Amazon for around $25. The CPU cooler is super cheap, especially for the performance you’ll receive.

If you are proactive, you’ll probably be able to find the cooler on sale. With mail-in rebates, the cooler can be bought for an even lower price.

What’s in the Box

The Vortex Plus ships with mounting brackets that support Intel socket LGA 1366 / 1156 / 1151 / 1150 / 775 and AMD socket AM4 / FM2+ / FM2 / FM1 / AM3+ / AM3 / AM2 / 940 / 939 / 754.

The cooler comes with everything you need to operate and install it. No need to worry about buying any additional parts.

Design

The Vortex Plus has four pipes making direct contact with the IHS of the CPU. They’re angled outwards for better heat distribution into the fins that draw the heat towards the exhaust fan.

The cooler is slightly offset, not only allowing room for memory below, but to compensate for clearance nearest the socket as well. This is how Cooler Master kept this cooler so low profile and compact.

Vortex Side

Size

This coolers dimensions are as follows: 116 x 100 x 84 mm

The slight offset to the cooler allows the cooler to have a low profile while still leaving room for memory beneath. It’s a fabulous design, perfect for micro-ATX builds.

If you’re looking for a cooler with slightly less bulk to it, this is the best choice for you.

Fan Specs

  • Dimensions: 92 x 92 x 25 mm
  • Speed: 800-2800 RPM
  • Air Flow: 15.7-54.8 CFM
  • Life Expectancy: 40,000 hours

Performance

Hardwaresecrets.com has written an extensive page with detailed tests, base temp, core temp, fan speed, noise, etc.

When the CPU was fully loaded, they found the temp of the CPU to be 78 degrees celcius. Compared to other coolers, the performance was moderate.

Considering these tests were performed without any overclocking, it’s safe to say if you plan on overclocking, you’ll need a better cooler.

On the other hand, if you don’t plan on overclocking, this is a great aftermarket cooling solution.

Noise

Cooler Master rates the minimum dBa of this cooler at 17 and the max dBa of this cooler at 35 dBa.

Unfortunately, the tests concluded otherwise. At max load, the cooler emitted 57 dBa of noise. Even at the CPU’s base frequency, the cooler was emitting 45 dBa. Evidently, the cooler is louder than advertised.

If noise is an issue for you, this cooler might not be the the best choice.

Conclusion

This cooler is cheap and gets the job done. Your CPU will stay within safe operating temperatures.

However, the cooler didn’t perform as well at max load. If you’re looking to overclock, you’ll probably want to look elsewhere. Furthermore, the cooler is a bit on the louder side.

Since this CPU cooler isn’t great for overclocking, we recommend sticking with the stock cooler, or getting a different model. If you want to overclock, there are better options out there.

Still, for just $25, it’s a good aftermarket alternative.
