RX 470 Mining Overall Scores:

  • Mining Performance: 4/5
  • Power Consumption: 4/5
  • Cooling: 4.5/5
  • Price/Performance: 4/5

If you want to mine Ethereum, we suggest the Radeon R9 295X2. It’s the best Ethereum miner on the market!

RX 400 Series Mining Overview

The RX 400 series is regarded as the best line of Ethereum mining GPUs – the RX 480 is one of the most profitable Ethereum mining GPUs on the market, especially in a well configured mining rig.

The 480’s little brother, the RX 470, has also proven itself to be a worthy mining GPU, especially for those on a budget. It features 8GB of memory that can be overclocked upt o 2100 MHz, much more than the 4GB model.

Furthermore, the RX 470 performs exceptionally well when its fans are underpowered to 30%-40%.

RX 470 Hashrate: Ethereum

Let’s take a look at the RX 470’s Ethereum mining performance:

Stock Performance:

  • Hashrate: 26.5 MH/s
  • Power Consumption: 160 W

The Sapphire NITRO+ RX 470 has 8GB of dedicated memory, making it a great choice for mining Ethereum’s memory hard algorithm. In case you didn’t know, Ethereum will gradually require more and more deciated VRAM until it eventually swithces to POS.

For now, you need at least 3GB of RAM – the more you have, the better.

The Nitro+ RX 470 was tested with Claymore miner, and achieved 26.5 MH/s while drawing 160 W from the wall with stock settings.

It’s important to note that the RX 480 can achieve a slightly higher hashrate while consuming a bit less power. You may also want to read our RX 580 review.

The RX 470 ships with an 8-pin PCI-E power connector. Additionally, it has two ground pins, compared to the 6-pin connector, which could have a positive impact on mining performance.

Check out the RX 470’s projected mining profitability:

Ethereum Profits with RX 470 8GB

Despite the RX 470’s adequate stock performance, it didn’t see much of an improvement when overclocked. However, it does fairly well when underpowered – it is useable with merely 30%-40% fan speed, which saves power (and money).

Ethereum Mining Conclusion

The RX 470 is primarily used for Ethereum mining. After being tested, it’s safe to say the RX 470 8GB is profitable. Although, it doesn’t perform as well as its big brother, the RX 480.

If you’re on a lower budget, the RX 470 is a good option. However, if you have the money, we recommend checking out the Radeon RX 480 or the Radeon R9 295X2, as they are more profitable.

RX 470 Hashrate: Zcash

Now let’s take a look at the RX 470’s Zcash mining performance:

Stock Performance:

  • Hashrate: 220 Sol/s
  • Power consumption: 150 W
  • Profit Ratio: 67% per day (calculated with 1 ZEC = 306.88)

Note: Sol/s and H/s are equivalent

Mining Zcash with the RX 470 is not as profitable as Ethereum mining, though you can still make money. Take a look:

Remember that every card is unique – you may be able to achieve better performance by overclocking or underpowing your card.

Zcash Mining Conclusion

For now, it seems as though Ethereum mining is more profitable with the RX 470. However, once Ethereum swithces to Proof-of-Stake, Zcash mining is a profitable alternative.

RX 470 Specs

  • Chipset: Radeon RX 470
  • Memory Size: 8GB
  • Memory Type: GDDR5
  • Core Clock: 1.12GHz
  • Boost Clock: 1.26GHz

Conclusion

The RX 470 is a profitable GPU for Ethereum and Zcash mining, especially when you tweak settings in the BIOS to overclock or underpower the card, depending on what’s best suited for your purposes.

The RX 480 is more profitable than its little brother, but the RX 470 is still a profitable solution for miners on a budget. Overall, the RX 470 is a good miner.
