Before you buy a monitor, it’s important to understand exactly what you’re getting.

Here are the main things to keep in mind before you make a purchase:

Refresh Rate

One thing you have got to understand before choosing a new monitor is what a monitor’s refresh rate is.

Beginning with the basics, you should by now know that video is just a series of images displayed at such a high speed that our brains register it as motion instead of a still picture.

Refresh rate is basically the rate at which the monitor can display these images in a second.

So a 60Hz monitor can display 60 images in one second, a 120Hz monitor can display 120 images in one second, so on and so forth.

The higher you go the more pictures the monitor can fit within the time frame, and the smoother the video is perceived by your eyes.

Resolution

Resolution, on the other hand, is the measure of how many pixels can be displayed on-screen at any given moment.

Techopedia defines resolution as:

a measure used to describe the sharpness and clarity of an image or picture and is often used as a metric for judging the quality of monitors, printers, digital images and a various other hardware and software technologies.

The most common resolutions for monitors are as follows:

G-Sync does this via an onboard chip built into the monitor that, well, syncs your graphics card and monitor by telling the GPU to wait until the monitor is ready before sending visual data.

As long as both your graphics card and monitor support G-Sync, it is a great way to receive smooth performance in games.

However, G-Sync does come with its drawbacks.

It costs a fair amount to implement G-Sync into systems and the threshold for G-Sync supported graphics card caps at mid-range, not to mention it is only supported by Nvidia GPUs – sorry AMD fans.

Freesync, though, is a little bit different.

AMD’s Freesync technology allows for your graphics card to take direct control of your monitors refresh rate to sync up.

On top of that, the software-based nature of Freesync allows for cheaper monitors considering you don’t need that extra processing chip as G-Sync does.

Freesync’s pool of GPUs is also much greater, ranging from the low ends of years past to the most expensive and new high-end cards.
